Provoked by talk of human equality

2010. At the opening of the Swedish parliament on 5th October 2010 Bishop Eva Brunne held a sermon that dealt with equality and human rights. In the speech she touched on the protests that recently had been held against racism and she stressed that racism is the idea that people should not have the same rights just because they are born in different countries.

She made clear that it was not worthy of a democracy to differentiate between people due to their origin. The Sweden Democrats newly elected MPs took this as a direct attack on their politics and decided to get up in the middle of the sermon at the Stockholm Cathedral and demonstratively march out – the group was led by Jimmie Åkesson dressed in the Swedish national costume.
